Xian

Xian is surrounded by a city wall. The modern city has grown beyond it, but it still surrounds the "downtown" area. It's a pretty big wall, but it's not Great. |

One of the things Xian is most famous for is the Terra-Cotta Warriors. They were just discovered a couple of decades ago. It is considered the 8th Wonder of the World. There are over 8,000 warriors and horses, many still buried in underground hallways in battle formation to protect their emperor. He's dead.

This is a fisherman using birds to catch fish. They put a ring around the bird's neck so it can't swallow the fish and then turn it loose to go fishing. The bird returns with the fish and the fisherman puts it in his basket. (The bird gets fed later.) In the picture, the fisherman is holding the bird which just returned with a fish. Sorry it's hard to see, but they only fish at night!
This guy isn't a fisherman and doesn't abuse poor birds by putting rings around their necks. He is just sitting by a rock. |
